Yoga Socks

Yoga SocksWearing the right clothing whilst doing yoga is essential. You want to make sure that what you’re wearing is comfortable and doesn’t interfere with the exercises you are doing or break your concentration due to having to think about your ill-fitting clothes. Specific yoga socks can help in the footwear department and are beneficial for a number of reasons. Let’s have a look …

Many people choose to do yoga barefooted, but there is a certain low hygiene factor in not wearing any thing on your feet, especially when sharing your yoga mat with other people. You can easily spread or pick up bacteria and germs, to and from other people. By wearing yoga socks you’ll reduce the risk of things like verrucas and other foot diseases that can be picked up from others.

Another risk of going barefoot is of course stepping on anything that might be harmful. This is especially true if practising outdoors, and a good pair of yoga socks will reduce the risk of an unwanted foreign object, such as a piece of glass or stone, from cutting your foot and getting embedded into the skin.

So, it’s best not to go barefoot, but what about wearing my everyday white cotton socks, won’t those do?
Well, no they won’t. Most normal socks can cause you to slip and injure yourself quite easily, whereas most yoga socks (the good ones anyway) will prevent you slipping during exercises by using special non-slip rubber dots. You will often find that specific yoga socks are also more breathable than your everyday ones and will reduce the chance of sweating and other similar problems.

What are yoga toe socks then?
These socks are even more specifically designed for yoga or pilates workouts and each toe is separated for extra control and to stop you from slipping off the mat. There is often also a line formed across the base of the toes so that you can keep your foot in good form and placement.

Putting on yoga socks is like having nice gloves but for your feet and they come in all shapes, colours, and sizes so that you can be guaranteed to find a great pair that will suit you. Don’t forget that the less you have to worry about when performing yoga, the more you will get out of the exercises you are doing.

In another article we’ll also look at yoga shoes, which can accompany yoga socks or even replace them entirely, so look out for that one.
